A thirty-ball rally feels different from a five-ball rally. You're lower, you pivot more often, and after twenty minutes, you really start to notice what you're wearing. A shirt stuck to your back. A sock that slips. Pants that pinch when you bend your knees.

Padel is not a sport where you run hard in a straight line. You make short, explosive movements in all directions, and this places different demands on your clothing than running or fitness.

Why cotton works against you

Cotton feels soft in the store, and that's precisely the problem. Cotton absorbs moisture and holds it. After a set, your shirt is heavy, cold, and wet, and it won't dry.

What you want is the opposite: a fabric that wicks moisture away from your skin to the outside, where it evaporates. This is called moisture-wicking or quick-dry. Usually, this is polyester or a blend of it, sometimes with elastane for stretch.

You'll only notice the difference in the third set. A quick-dry shirt will still feel light then. A cotton shirt will cling to your body.

What to look for in a shirt

Stretch in the shoulders. When performing a bandeja or smash, your arm moves far back. A shirt that doesn't move with it will throw you off balance.

No seams on friction points. Seams under the armpit or over your shoulder blade will chafe as soon as you start to sweat. Flat seams or seamless constructions prevent this.

A fit that doesn't stick. Too tight is hot, too loose will cling to you during a turning movement. You're looking for something in between.

Socks are more important than you think

Padel is played on artificial grass with sand. You brake, you push off sideways, and your foot slides in your shoe with each movement. A little bit every time.

A thin cotton sock just lets that happen. A sports sock with some cushioning under the ball of your foot and a tight cuff keeps your foot in place. That prevents blisters and reduces fatigue over an entire match.

Choose a sock that comes above your shoe collar. Otherwise, the edge of your shoe will rub against your ankle.

Indoors or outdoors

Indoors, it's warm and still: then you want as little fabric as possible and maximum breathability.

Outdoors, you play with wind and changing weather. A thin layer over it that you can easily take off is more convenient than one thick layer.

Two things that keep your clothes in good condition longer

Wash at thirty degrees, without fabric softener. Fabric softener leaves a layer on the fibers, which reduces moisture wicking.

Hang it up instead of using the dryer. Heat damages elastane, and then your shirt loses its stretch.

In summary

Padel requires clothing that moves with you and wicks away moisture. Cotton does neither. Pay attention to stretch in the shoulders, seams in the right place, and a sock that keeps your foot in place.

It sounds like details, but in the third set, these are precisely the things you'll notice. View our Orbit clothing collection here.
